Dr Patrick Hazlewood
Headteacher
St John's School and Community College
Dr Patrick Hazlewood is Headteacher of St John’s School & Community College, Marlborough an 11-19 1500 co-educational comprehensive. During the 1980s he worked in Dorset, Devon, Cambridgeshire (Head of Science), Wiltshire (Deputy Head) and was involved in curriculum research and development most notably in the field of Global Education in the Science curriculum working with the Centre for Global Education, University of York, WWF and the Council for Environmental Education.
Appointed to his first Headship at Pool School and Community College, Cornwall (1991-96), a school in challenging circumstances, he completed his PhD (Exon) in the field of successful management of secondary schools (1994). His second headship from 1996 provided the opportunity to build on this research and challenge the static and restrictive nature of the secondary curriculum and management practice.
Working with the RSA from 1999 to date on the Opening Minds Project (Education for the 21st Century) he has successfully implemented a new curriculum which places the learner at the centre of educational endeavour and re-defines the role of the teacher – for schools in the 21st Century. He is working on redefining the school in the 21st century, how schools can be more effectively managed in the learner centred curriculum and the translation of Opening Minds into a global curriculum framework (recent publication “Nurturing Independent Thinkers” Bosher and Hazlewood 2005) as well as managing the building of a new school.
