Public engagement

how public opinion is used to inform the project

An important part of Beyond Current Horizons is to engage people from all walks of life, to find out about their hopes, fears and priorities for education in the future.

Beyond Current Horizons aims to gather representative opinions from all areas of society – to ensure that the research programme is shaped not only by scientific evidence, but by the values and aspirations of everyone with a stake in education.

  • Engaging online tools like Million Futures and Power League are being used to capture people’s ideas about the future of education. These can be used by groups as well as individuals - for example in the classroom.
  • The Beyond Current Horizons blog enables the sharing of views on new developments in the project.
  • An informed and representative Citizens Council is being set up, to provide guidance on the research programme.
  • Other activities - including an online survey and a series of public events - have already fed into the research programme and helped to inform its direction.

Alongside the public engagement activities is a programme of stakeholder engagement, linking up with key stakeholders from policy, practitioner and industry groups, through events and one-to-one consultation, to enable their input into the project.

Beyond Current Horizons will continue to engage and involve the public in its activities. As the research gets translated into action, there will be more opportunities to get involved - for example helping with the design and testing of new resources.
