FAQ

Using a public league
You can take part in the two leagues that you see on the home page. When you click on one of the leagues you will be taken to a voting page, where you are presented with a question, such as "What should our priorities for education be in the future?" and two items from which to make a choice. You will also see a link that says 'View this league'. Clicking the 'Go' button will show you how the items in the league are currently positioned based on the votes that have been registered so far.

Creating your own league
You need to register on the Power League site to start creating your own leagues. Simply click on the 'Get involved: register now' link and complete the form. Once you have registered and activated your account (by e-mail) you will be able to start making your own leagues by clicking on the 'Make new league: start' link.

FAQ

Q: How are the league positions calculated?
A: There is a complex algorithm that determines how the items are positioned in the league. It works like this: each item is given a score, which is the proportion of votes it has won - an item with a score of 1 has won every vote it has been in, an item with a score of zero hasn't won any votes, an item with a score of 0.75 has won three quarters of its votes; the higher an item's score the higher its ranking. For any league the average score will be 0.5.
Note about the significance of ranking: Just because one item has a higher score than another doesn't mean it is objectively more popular; if the scores are close together or not many votes have yet been cast, then it may be just luck that one has a higher score. We only say x is more popular than y if we are at least 95% certain that it is. For both leagues, significance can't be calculated until everything has been pitched against everything else. For a league with N items that is ( N x ( N - 1 ) ) / 2. For a league with 70 items that will take 2415 votes. For a league with 73 items that will take 2628 votes.

Q: How do I leave a comment about or discuss a league?
A: Go to the 'View this league' page for the league you want to discuss, and then click the 'Talk about this league' link. Here you can simply add a comment and see what other people have been saying about the league, and reply to those comments too.

Q: How do I report inappropriate content?
A: When taking part in someone else's league (not one of the leagues from the home page), you will see there is a link called 'Report inappropriate content' on the voting page and on the league page. Simply click on this link and you will be asked to select which of the items on that page you wish to report. As soon as you report an item, it will automatically be removed from that league, and the league owner will be informed that they need to moderate that item (either permanently delete it or republish it.)

Q: How do I add an item to a league?
A:
Adding an item to one of the two public leagues (listed on the homepage): You can 'suggest' an item that you think should be added to either of the two public leagues by clicking the 'Suggest an item' button. This will take you to a form where you can create a league item and send it to us as a suggestion.
If you are the league owner: Click on 'My leagues', then next to the league you want to add an item to, just click on the 'Edit/moderate' link. Now click on the 'Add item' link.
If you are using someone else's league: You can only add an item to a league if the owner of that league has allowed users to do this. If this is the case, while you are viewing or voting on the league, you will see a link called 'Add an item to this league'. Clicking on that will take you to a form where you can create a league item and immediately publish it to that league.

Q: How do I delete an item from a league?
A: You can only delete an item from a league if you own that league, and if that league isn't yet published. In the "My leagues" page, under "Work in progress" simply click on "Edit/publish" next to the league you want to delete an item from. Now click on step 5, "Review" and scroll down the list of your items - you will see an "Edit" link under each item in your league. Clicking on these will take you to a screen where you can either change the item, or simply click on the "Delete this item" button to remove it from your league.

Q: How do I republish an item someone has reported as inappropriate?
A: When someone has reported an item in your league as inappropriate, you will see a notification appear on the left-hand side of the site saying you have content to moderate:

Simply click on the 'View now' link and you will see all items that have been reported. Click on the 'Moderate' link next to the item you want to republish, and you will be able to then see the details of that item and click on a link called 'Republish this item'.

Q: Can I reset votes of zero on my league?
A: You can do this by going to 'My leagues' and then clicking on 'Edit/moderate league' next to the league you want to do this to. Then click on the 'Clear all votes' link.

Q: How do I customise or make my own league?
A: You can make your own league by registering on the Power League website, and then simply clicking on the 'Make new league' link on the home page.

Q: How many leagues can I make?
A: You can make as many or as few leagues as you wish (as long as you are registered on the website). There is no limit.

Q: Are my leagues public?
A: They are only viewable to people who you have shared the unique URL and password for your league with, and who is registered on the Power League site. The URL (link) and password for a league can be seen when you first publish your league. These will also be shown in the e-mail that you send when inviting friends to view your league.
